I’m rating this from a TRAIL RUNNER perspective. This heavily rooty, loose rock, not-for-the-faint-at-heart, narrow, stone-dirt trail through PW Park is best suited for hikers and semi-athletic walkers. Lots of elevation changes, no panoramic view payoffs, and at-times casually marked turns made for a crazy 6+ mile run that was spent mostly just starting at my feet hoping and trying not to slip and break anything. I’ve run plenty of trails and I wanted to love this one as I’m a big believer in trail running. This trail, total no go for this runner. Again, might be great for hikers and athletic walkers under 60, but that’s really about it.
Beautiful place to hike, these pics were taken after our last ice storm.
We biked the trails in the southern portion last week, and we loved it so much we went back yesterday! However I would not recommend biking the trail named Hop Project to Humdinger. Hop Project is very hard getting up the hill and very minimal downhill if you take Humdinger. Humdinger was a let down as well because there were huge ramps that only the guttsiest person with the most expensive bike would do. So I would recommend taking the Blvd. to the Wabash Cannon and then taking Screaming Delta Demon down. Demon is the most fun you will have mountain biking. Big bank turns, table top jumps, and more! Ah, it's so fun! I can't wait to go back! Also the trails are very well marked.
This is a roller coaster trail. Red trail is about 5.5 miles. The new signage is better but you still need to really watch where you started so as not to miss the way back to the deep well parking lot.
***This trail (Mossy Ridge - red) has been redone recently***. It was rocky and steep and rooty fun house, AKA, a technical trail runners dream. Definitely disagree with the reviews saying it was not for trail runners. Maybe it’s not for trail runners that can’t handle tech and steeps. BUT, the trail has been largely turned into hard pack dirt, so I’m sure Mr. Warner will be able to run here now that you don’t have to pick up your feet to run the trail. Also not sure how he got 6 miles out of a 4.5 mile trail. Trail is well marked, follow the red trail blazed and trail head signs. It is still steep in some places but there is barely 500 feet of elevation. Well shaded pretty much the whole way, wide enough to pass when needed. Hopefully the rain will wash away all the dust from the trail rebuild and also bring back some of the rocks and roots that made the trail interesting and fun.
