El Bruno's Restaurante y Cantina

El Bruno's is just about the perfect Mexican restaurant. Food, atmosphere, and service were tops. Their food was fantastic. May I recommend Carnitas Ala Mex: tender cubed steak with cheese enchiladas, rice and beans.

El Bruno's is so good. We drove an hour out of the way we were going, just to eat there. They have some of the best Mexican food that we have ever eaten. The staff is super friendly and we love the atmosphere of the restaurant. We highly recommend El Bruno's.

El Bruno's is going through some changes right now as it builds a new kitchen and adds a bar. For the moment, it closes at 5:30 pm as the cooks are working out of a food truck out back and it gets too chilly at night to work. The food we ordered was stellar. I had a bacon and avocado burger. The bun was delicious, the burger was cooked the way I like it, the ingredients were all fresh and tasty. The fries were top-notch: I haven't had fries that good in a long time. The chips were warm and the iced tea was fresh and made perfectly. The servers were gracious and attentive and the place was clean. I would say El Bruno's is doing great given the changes that are happening!

The first thing I always have to do upon entering New Mexico is stop at the first place with Chili Verde made with Hatch chilis. This trip it was El Bruno's. This is a small town in the middle of nowhere with under 735 residents as of the last census. Given that, and that while it's on the main road, this is not on a tourist route, not within a hundred miles of any Interstate. Both times we ate here it had a solid number of people. There is a large lobby where you can purchase bottles of the Hatch chili sauce. I bought several. That stuff is magic in a bottle. I even sprung and bought a bottle of Hatch chili wine. That should be interesting. The menu reads like a standard complete Tex Mex menu, except that when you're in New Mexico, it has that Southwest twist (like Hatch chilis) you don't get anywhere else. The chips and salsa are good, but the real magic is that when the main courses come, you get scones with honey. They are wonderful. The service is friendly. There is a large selection of well priced Margaritas with an very good selection of Tequila to choose from. I can't imagine it getting better than this small town gem.
